This year I am proudly saying NO to Black Friday! I own two businesses, Holly’s Lollies and The Slabb and neither will be joining in.
I’m not just a misery and I’m not the only one! There is a whole community of small creatives and artisans, saying no and putting their foot down. Inspired by the wonderful By Charlie’s Hand, we are starting a movement.
For us, Black Friday is simply not viable. We are small businesses. We are going to value ourselves as we should. When you buy from a small business you are getting so much extra value anyway, you get something unique, something made and designed with love. We won’t devalue ourselves to get extra sales, for less money and let our standards slip!
I am not judging anyone who shops at Black Friday, but know that you might not actually be getting a good deal, retailers hike prices up to bring them back down. The also bring our BF special versions of things like TVs that have lower spec and therefore a lower price, so be careful out there!
I am also not judging small businesses who feel they have to take part in Black Friday to keep up, that is the culture we have now come to live in. People EXPECT black Friday, but this is why we have put our foot down, as sellers and consumers.
Small creatives, design, make and live and breathe their products. We price them at value that covers our time, training, and costs (of which their are many) but also a value that we think is fair. There is no movement in our prices for Black Friday. We simply don’t have the margins of big retailers. We don’t mass produce. We are unique.
This week there will be thousands of of lists all over the internet, telling you where to get the best black friday deals. So I present to you an alternative list of deals. The deal you get when you shop small.
Take 10 minutes away from the madness this week and click the links below to discover some wonderful and talented business owners who are saying no to Black Friday.
These lovely people above have written, printed, embroidered, made t shirts and ribbon, all to say no to Black Friday. Heck, they have even used children and gogs to get the message across. Most of us want to cover our tired faces, because we are working our butts off to make beautiful things, but we did it anyway. It the above doesn’t show you how creative and committed we are, I don’t know what will.
